Tooth Extraction
It is perfectly normal to experience apprehension and mixed emotions when you need a tooth removed. You can be confident that our team will go above and beyond to ensure your comfort and put you at ease during your procedure.
At Marshall Dentistry, our primary goal is to help you keep your natural teeth for as long as possible; however, sometimes circumstances arise that require a tooth extraction to protect your dental health. During those times, our team will guide you through the extraction process, support your recovery, and advise on tooth replacement if needed.
When Do We Recommend Tooth Extraction?
Dr. Marshall may suggest tooth extraction for these circumstances:
- A decayed or fractured tooth is unsalvageable
- A wisdom tooth is causing pain or crowding
- An infected tooth that cannot be saved with root canal treatment
- A tooth compromised by periodontitis (advanced gum disease)
- To prepare for orthodontic treatment or dentures
Should We Extract Wisdom Teeth?
The answer to the question of removing wisdom teeth for most patients is—yes. Wisdom teeth are your third set of molars that arrive in the back of your mouth behind the second molars around the ages of 17 to 25. Some people may not need them removed, but some common reasons we do recommend extracting wisdom teeth are:
- Space constraints — Most people don’t have enough room in their jaws for wisdom teeth, which can cause crowding.
- Impaction — Some wisdom teeth remain stuck below the gumline, or impacted, which could cause an infection.
- Cleanliness — Wisdom teeth are far back in the mouth, making brushing and flossing challenging. If you can’t keep them clean, it increases your risk of developing problems like tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease.
- Odd angles: Wisdom teeth sometimes erupt at odd angles that could damage neighboring molars.
